There’s no Bed and Breakfast like an Island Bed and Breakfast!

Vancouver Island is an ideal place to get away and is home to many fine and friendly West Coast B&Bs—whether you prefer our rugged West Coast with its long sandy surfing beaches, wildlife, whale watching, and rain forest hiking trails, or our more sheltered inside coast with its beautiful gardens, walking and cycling paths, golfing, fishing, winery tours, and shopping, you’ll find quaint and unique, yet modern, accommodations to suit every taste. Here are a few that have been featured in More Living magazine…

Applewood Cottage: The little house in the Valley

Occupying up to six people, one such fabulous place for rent is Applewood Cottage, a little way southwest of downtown Courtenay on Lake Trail Road. A mere 25-minute drive from Mt. Washington, this snug converted barn is handily situated for easy access to the city’s shopping, nightlife and restaurants, yet also offers an idyllic and tranquil rural setting.

Cufra Cliffs Cottage on Thetis Island

Set atop one of the island’s high points, this lovely open plan accommodation is a simple, snug cottage of modern build, but the setting is everything. Because it is set amongst and surrounded by trees—those at the back of the cottage sloping sharply downwards to Cufra Inlet 300 feet below, then rising up from the chasm into thick forest at the other side—there is a sensation of being in a forest canopy. This is considerably promoted by the astonishing profusion of winged life.

The Blue Owl B&B on Denman Island

Fixed over the entrance to The Blue Owl B&B on Denman Island is a piece of gently arched old wood. It would be perfectly feasible to stay in this intimate little cottage for days and not notice it, or else spot it but not give it a second thought. Yet when learning the significance of this seemingly ordinary object, its history and why it is there, I feel you will be as delighted as I was and, if you’re like me, rather moved by the story.

Mañana Guest House &
Hasta Mañana Charters

Landlocked in a huge British city, I never made total sense of the environment I grew up in. Something personally vital was missing, but I came to recognize what it was. Quite simply, I always felt most alive when near a substantial body of water, so when spending vacation time in or on lakes or the sea, I was absolutely in my element. I guess I was born with brine in my veins and meant to live by the ocean.

To the casual eye, there is not one thing remotely unusual about Mulberry Lane. Like thousands of similarly sleepy cul-de-sacs the world over, it presents a clutch of attractive dwellings spectacular only in their ordinariness. A micro-community perfectly content in its anonymity, this little corner of Comox seems pretty much that and only that. But is it?

 Castlebury Cottage

The enduring visual and emotional appeal of castles is not difficult to understand. On the one hand they are intimidating fortresses, often dominating their locale from a dramatic elevated location. Atop their lofty positions they exude a compelling mystery and foreboding territorial authority. And that so many remain perfectly intact and functional hundreds of years since their construction simply reinforces the notion of their impenetrability.

 Jupiter Ranch

Modestly marketing itself as a B & Bofficially accurate as a member of the island’s collaborative B & B associationit is, with just two bedrooms, more like a retreat, where a contemplative atmosphere seems guaranteed. The slogans designed to express what guests are in for are succinct: “A far out place to stay,” and “Zen living in a pastoral setting.”

Spirit Spheres

Raised a short distance from her smaller sister sphere, Eve—lucidly so named as the first of its kind - Eryn is sited in a tranquil copse cradling a pretty, reed-fringed pond. At the base of the tree to which the ingenious spiral staircase accessing Eryn is rigged, we just gazed up, slack-jawed, feeling how I’d imagine it must prior to entering a spaceship.
